LEXINGTON, Ky. - Washington State’s Kyra Holt was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year.

Through a vote of the region’s coaches, Holt, a 6-1 outside hitter from Hercules, Calif., added yet another honor to her impressive collegiate career. This is the 12th time a Cougar player has receive an AVCA Regional honor.

Holt was an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention team selection as well as a Pac-12 All-Freshman team selection. She led the Cougars this season with a 3.89 kills per set average, ranked seventh-best in the conference, and a 4.53 points per set average, also seventh-best in the Pac-12. She also had a 0.28 service aces per set average which is eighth-best in the Pac-12. Holt also etched her name into the WSU single season records with 479 kills, fifth-best, and her 1,316 attack attempts total is third-best. She had double-digit kills in 29 of WSU’s 33 matches this year and had 12 matches with double kills and digs which is tied for ninth-best in the conference this year. Her 28 kills in the upset win at No. 23 California is tied for second-best total kills in a match in the Pac-12 this season. She was selected the MVP of the Army Black Knights and Sam Houston State tournaments and was a four-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week selection in 2013.

“We are honored at the selection of Kyra as the Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year and are so proud of her and the team’s accomplishments,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “We are looking forward to the future with Kyra and making even more progress.”

The AVCA divides the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball programs into 10 regions and a 14-member All-Region team, six-member honorable mention team were selected along with a freshman of the year and coach of the year awards. The coaches may nominate but not vote for their own players.

The Pac-12 Conference, divided by the AVCA between the Pacific North and Pacific South Regions, had 16 players named to the all-region teams in 2013.

    • Kyle Roach named NWC Player of the Year

      Roach, a junior from Marinwood, California, becomes the 12th player in Pirate history to earn NWC Player of the Year recognition.

    • Camy Aguinaldo named NWC Freshman of the Year

      The 5-3 guard from Honolulu averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.  She led the conference in assists by a wide margin and ranked 23rd in all of NCAA Division III.

    • Bogdan Bliznyuk wins another Big Sky Player of the Week

      Bliznyuk is now 31 points from becoming just the fifth player in league history to hit the 2,000-point mark in his career after making 53.3 percent of his shots from the field last week.
