SPOKANE, Wash. -

A man who has already endured more than most is facing a new challenge.

Over the weekend, James VanCuren's snow tires were stolen from outside his garage before being installed on his truck.

"I'm not taking the pass this time of year with bald tires," said VanCuren.

The loss of his tires is bad enough, but that's only the latest chapter in VanCuren's story.

He desperately needs the tires to travel the pass to Seattle to meet with lung transplant doctors to get on a wait-list for an operation that will save his life.

For the last twenty years, he's battled deteriorating health issues as a result of an accident when he was 9 years old. He was run over by a car and he was in a medically induced coma for over 200 days. His lingering respiratory problems led to pulmonary fibrosis and he needs oxygen everywhere he goes.

Unfortunately, that's not the end of VanCuren's emotional story.

"My tragedies haven't only been my accident," he explained.

In 2008, VanCuren's son Izayah was beaten to death at the hands of his mother's boyfriend. Upon Izayah's death, VanCuren decided to donate his organs, to give the gift of life to other children.

"There's a boy in Canada living off of his heart...there's a little girl in Wisconsin with his liver," VanCuren tearfully added. "I know what it is, the feelings that a family has to go through, of the loss, but also the bravery to give that gift of life."

Now, VanCuren finds himself on the other end of that experience, hoping he will get that precious gift himself.

He told KHQ he just wants the tires back and will not press charges.

Since the story aired on KHQ Local News at 5, many residents have called offering to help, and we are told that process is now happening. We will update you as soon as we know more.
