SPOKANE, Wash.- A Spokane man is reeling from the loss of his beloved dog after she was attacked by two pit bulls on Thursday while they were out on a walk.

It happened in a field on 32nd Avenue and Havana just a couple blocks from Chase Middle School. Dan Pelle was walking his dog Koko when he spotted two young teens and their dogs.

"I saw the two pit bulls intersect our path, we decided to let them pass and have their way. I didn't realize they were pit bulls at the time. We stopped. One of the dog's circled back, just searching in the forest, saw us and just charged right over here, right down this path. It stopped, smelled our dog once and just hit her right around the neck. The other dog just attacked her from the rear and just took her down. I immediately started screaming and I tried to use my stick to fight them off. The two youths that were with them came running and tried to take them off to no avail. They were way too strong and way too powerful."

Many people walk their pets in this area and Pelle says he hasn't heard of any attacks happening in the field before. Pelle carried a walking stick with him every time he took his dog Koko for a walk. This time he used it to try and fend off the attack from two pit bulls as they mauled Koko.

One pit bull pinned Pelle to the ground. He used the stick to pry the pit bull's mouth open to free his dog ang himself and that's how he made his escape.

One of the teens yelled "Get out of here! Get out of here!" Pelle says the teens thought they may lose control over the dogs after they were able to pry Koko from the pit bulls grip.

Koko suffered injuries to her neck, chest, and back legs.  She had to be euthanized.
"Its been a very difficult time for us, this dog meant everything to us she was the center of our lives for the past 11 years ."

Pelle says he hopes the teens will turn the dogs in, "I understand that they tried their best to try and put a stop to this but those dogs were so dangerous. Spokanimal needs to be involved with this. They need to make a determination on what to do with these animals. If they have these dogs out here, it will happen again. There's no doubt in my mind. We're talking other animals, maybe even children."

Pelle describes the young teens as African American males. They look to be in middle school or high school. One boy was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and the other was wearing bright clothing. The attack happened at around 2:20 Thursday afternoon. An award is being offered for any information that will lead to the pit bulls being turned in. If you know anything about this attack call Spokanimal at 509) 534-8133.
