KHQ EXCLUSIVE: Avondre Graham's Family Speaks With KHQ In First Media Interview

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

In her first media interview since her son was arrested, Avondre Graham's mother spoke to KHQ. Graham was sentenced Tuesday for an attack on Debbie Watkin's on the Centennial Trail last year. A month ago he was sentenced for the murder of Sharlotte McGill in a separate attack. McGill was walking her dog in May of last year when she was randomly murdered walking her dog. The police called it the first random murder in Spokane in decades.

Stephanie Miramontes is Graham's mother and she says that he did not kill Sharlotte McGill. She says that her son has taken responsibility for the attack on Debbie Watkins, but she says he was at home the day McGill was killed. Miramontes says that her family will work to have him exonerated on a murder conviction because she believes the detectives forced him into a confession because they didn't have a strong case. Miramontes says that the detectives took advantage of her son who has a mental capacity much younger than his 19 year old age and she says that is the only reason he confessed. Miramontes told KHQ's Alex Rozier that they told her son he would get 3 to 5 years if he confessed, but 25 to life if he did not. She says because he does not have the mental capacity to know he can fight it in court, that is why he agreed to the deal.

The Spokane Police did not want to comment on this story or their interview with Avondre Graham. The courts and the police believe Graham is guilty in both cases. If everything stands as it is right now Graham will serve a little more than 11 years in prison.
