by Whitworth University Sports Information

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Whitworth University women’s basketball team turned 28 offensive rebounds into 28 points in a 77-51 win over Warner Pacific in nonconference action on Bart Valentine Court on Tuesday evening.

Whitworth (5-3) jumped out to a 9-0 lead on early baskets from seniors Kendra Lahue and Kayla Johnson. Warner Pacific (4-8) responded with a 7-0 run over the course of a minute of action to make it a two point game, but the Pirates regained control on a pair of free throws from sophomore KC McConnell. After leading by as many as 11 points in the first half, Whitworth took a 36-29 lead into halftime.

Johnson hit two of her four three-pointers in the first two minutes of second half action to give the Pirates a 42-33 lead. The Knights could not keep the Pirates off the boards, as Whitworth used offensive putbacks to balloon their lead to double-digits and out of Warner Pacific’s reach. Sophomore Alexis McLeod put the finishing touch on the game, sinking a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Pirates a 77-51 win.

The Pirates outrebounded the Knights 52-38, including 28 offensive boards. The Pirates shot 35 percent from the floor and had 17 assists on 28 field goals.

Johnson led the Pirates with a season-high 24 points, while KC McConnell grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. McConnell added 20 points for the Pirates, while Kendra Lahue scored 13 points. Sophomore Lexie Zappone pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out five assists.

Janelle Weiss led the Knights with 14 points and three steals. Lacy Wood was the only other Knight in double figures, as she added 13 points. Ali Campbell grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, while Jessica Thoens dished out four assists.

Next up, Whitworth will conclude its nonconference schedule at Northwest University on December 28th. The Pirates and the Eagles will tipoff at 2:00 p.m. in Kirkland, Wash.
