Semi Overturns, Spilling Holiday Hams On I-85 Ramp

ATLANTA (AP) - A truck overturned in metro Atlanta, spilling tons of hams onto an interstate ramp.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the truck was hauling 40,000 pounds of hams Thursday around 4 a.m. when it overturned, spilling its cargo south of Atlanta. Authorities were working early Thursday to clear the ramp from Old National Highway to Interstate 85 southbound after the crash.
    
The cab of the truck was destroyed in the crash, which also caused a diesel fuel spill.
    
Truck driver, Rigo Vargas, said he was hauling the hams to Texas when he wrecked. He said he banged his head against the door when the rig flipped over, but wasn't seriously hurt.

    SPOKANE, Wash. - A retired Spokane Police captain is fighting for his life in the hospital.   Keith Cummings and his wife Holly were on vacation in Costa Rica and got into a head-on crash with another truck on Friday. In an online fundraiser, their daughter, Rachel Durkin, said her mother is recovering in a hotel room with several facial fractures and a pelvic fracture.

    SEATTLE (AP) - Police say a 78-year-old Renton man fatally shot and killed his grandson in what police believe was an act of self-defense.    The Seattle Times reports police were called to a Renton home Saturday night, where a 26-year-old man had reportedly assaulted his mother, said Renton police Cmdr. Dave Leibman.

    KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) - Glacier National Park had more than 92,000 visitors last month, increasing by nearly 9 percent after a wildfire led to closures in August and September. The Flathead Beacon reports the park recorded a year-to-date visitation of 2.9 million, down by about 10.8 percent to the nearly 3.3 million visitors recorded through the same period last year.
