Eags Prepare For Clash With Boise State

by EWU Athletics Media Relations

Winners of three straight, the Eastern Washington women's basketball team closes out its nonconference schedule against Boise State Friday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Reese Court.

Fans that wear ugly sweaters to the game will receive admission for $2. Santa Swoop will also make an appearance and will be available for photos during halftime.

The Eagles' series with Boise State is the second-longest-running series between EWU and a nonconference opponent. The two have met 38 times prior to Friday's contest. The Broncos lead the all-time series, 23-15, but the series is even at 9-9 in Cheney. Head coach Wendy Schuller is 3-3 all-time versus the Broncos.

Eastern (3-5) is coming off a convincing win over Northwest University, 90-48, last Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Eagles have won their last three games, including home victories over Cal State Northridge and Idaho. Junior guard Lexie Nelson led all scorers with 21 points in EWU's rout of Northwest, leading three Eagles in double figures. Senior center Laura Hughes added 13 points and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes while freshman Tisha Phillips chipped in 10 points and a game-high-tying eight rebounds.

EWU shot better than 40 percent from three-point range against Northwest, burying nine triples. Eastern was also prolific from the charity stripe, finishing 19-of-21 from the free throw line.

The Eagles have been deadly from the three-point line all season, shooting a Big Sky-best 36.8 percent from long range. EWU is making an average of 7.1 three-pointers per game, a mark that ranks third in the conference. Nelson tops all BSC players with a three-point percentage of 48.8 percent while senior Aubrey Ashenfelter (38.1 percent) and sophomore Hayley Hodgins (36.6 percent) rank sixth and seventh, respectively.

Boise State (4-5) enters Friday's game having lost its last two outings, falling at Portland before losing at home to San Francisco. The Broncos' best win came over Big Sky member Idaho State, 72-70, back on Nov. 29. BSU is shooting 37.7 percent from the field while allowing its opponents to connect at a 43-percent clip. Miquelle Askew (14.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Lexie Der (12.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg) are the Broncos' top offensive threats while Yaiza Rodriguez (10.8 ppg, 3.1 apg, 2.0 3FG made) is the team's biggest threat from long range.
