Hospital Employees Bring Joy To Struggling Patients and Families

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - For a lot of people, the holidays usually accompany a few vacation days from work.

But, for those who work in hospitals, this is a very important time of the year to be at work.  This is because during the holidays, it is extra tough on families with sick and struggling family members.

"The holidays have a special meaning," explained Michael Oshry, a Staff Chaplain in the cardiology department at Providence Sacred Heart.  "When folks are sick and infirmed, family is here in most instances...but in rare instances, I see no family at all."

The doctors, nurses, chaplains, and everyone else in between, provide vital services to sick patients and their family members all year.  But, it is at this time of year that they mean the most.

"It takes a special person to work full time in a hospital setting, to work with patients who are sick, who are scared, and we find ways to make it easier for them," said Oshry.  "It's the compassion we have here, each of us helps one another, helps us rise to the occasion, be the best they could be."

Staff Chaplain Roxi Foell also understands the importance of the holiday hospital staff.

"Unfortunately we can't change the circumstance," explained Foell.  "[We] find what brings them hope, brings them joy, trying to incorporate that into their stay here."

Oshry advises people to stay close to loved ones in the hospital.

"Stay as close as you can, even if it's a phone call, Skype, or Facetime," said Oshry.  "Make a point to come visit, bringing goodies, staying close by, and actually saying the words 'I love you.'"

And, if you can't stop by the hospital, know that the hospital staffs are committed to bringing their patients joy all year, but especially, during this holiday season.
