Karnowski, Zags Defeat Saint Mary's 73-51

Posted:
SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 24 Gonzaga University men's basketball team took advantage of Saint Mary's College's poor shooting night en route to a 73-51 drudging of the Gaels at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Thursday, Jan. 2.

The Bulldogs (13-2, 3-0 West Coast Conference) were able to dominate in the paint thanks to Przemek Karnowski's 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks, while lighting it up from beyond the arc going 9-19 as a team from three-point range.

SMC (10-4, 1-1) was unable to make a three-pointer until just under three minutes left in the game and went only 1-of-12 from range. Beau Levesque was the only player to score regularly for the Gaels, he finished with a team-high 12 points, but was in foul trouble early in the first half and his playing time was limited. The Gaels also failed to record an assist until late in the second half and had only two team assists in the game.

In Sam Dower Jr.'s absence--the senior forward played sparingly tonight as he was still nursing a lower-back injury--Louisville transfer Angel Nunez made his presence known. Nunez scored 13 points and nabbed 8 rebounds in 14 minutes played. Kevin Pangos dropped in 15 points, grabbed eight boards and had four assists, while Kyle Dranginis and Drew Barham combined for 21 points and went 5-of-9 from downtown.

Gonzaga will host Pacific this Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Kennel. The Tigers (9-4, 0-2) lost 88-80 to Saint Mary's on Dec. 30 and fell 72-64 to Portland Thursday, Jan. 2.
