Man Arrested After Standoff With SWAT Team

DEER PARK, Wash. -

Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies and SWAT Team members were involved in an hours long standoff in Deer Park Friday morning in response to an assault call.

A press release issued by Deputy Craig Chamberlin Friday afternoon stated the victim told deputies that 70-year-old Michael Martin had beat him up and assaulted another tenant with a baseball bat Friday morning at a trailer park in the 300 block of S. Fir. Neither victim required medical attention.

However, when deputies arrived to talk with Martin, he walked back into his trailer and refused to open the door. Chamberlin said because deputies did not know if Martin had any other weapons in his trailer, and because he had barricaded himself inside, the decision was made to call in the SWAT Team and negotiators.

Several attempts were made to contact Martin, but he never responded. A search warrant was signed and the SWAT Team made their way into the trailer and arrested Martin, who was sitting in his chair, without incident. Chamberlin said Martin told deputies he did not want to open the door.

Martin was booked into jail for one count of felony assault and one count of misdemeanor assault.

UPDATE:

DEER PARK, Wash. - A SWAT Standoff in Deer Park that lasted about 4 hours came to an end around 1:30 Friday afternoon. After obtaining a search warrant, SWAT entered a mobile home at 300 S. Fir Street and found the suspect sitting in his chair.

70-year-old Michael Martin was taken into custody.

Around 9am the man assaulted a tenant and the owner of the trailer park with a bat. Both victims have minor injuries. One of the victims called police. When deputies arrived the suspect ran back inside his trailer and barricaded himself inside.

At this time it is unknown if he has any other weapons besides the bat.

He is believed to be the only person inside the trailer. Suspect is known to deputies, but his name has not yet been released.  Right now the suspect is not cooperating. He will at least be facing felony assault charges.
