DEER PARK, Wash. -

Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies and SWAT Team members were involved in an hours long standoff in Deer Park Friday morning in response to an assault call.

A press release issued by Deputy Craig Chamberlin Friday afternoon stated the victim told deputies that 70-year-old Michael Martin had beat him up and assaulted another tenant with a baseball bat Friday morning at a trailer park in the 300 block of S. Fir. Neither victim required medical attention.

However, when deputies arrived to talk with Martin, he walked back into his trailer and refused to open the door. Chamberlin said because deputies did not know if Martin had any other weapons in his trailer, and because he had barricaded himself inside, the decision was made to call in the SWAT Team and negotiators.

Several attempts were made to contact Martin, but he never responded. A search warrant was signed and the SWAT Team made their way into the trailer and arrested Martin, who was sitting in his chair, without incident. Chamberlin said Martin told deputies he did not want to open the door.

Martin was booked into jail for one count of felony assault and one count of misdemeanor assault.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - Shakil Afridi has languished in jail for years — since 2011, when the Pakistani doctor used a vaccination scam in an attempt to identify Osama bin Laden’s home, aiding U.S. Navy Seals who tracked and killed the al-Qaida leader. Americans might wonder how Pakistan could imprison a man who helped track down the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.
