MOSES LAKE, Wash. -

The Moses Lake Police Department released additional details Friday afternoon regarding a fatal officer involved shooting that took place on December 30th, 2013.

According to a press release, police say officers were sent to the 2000 block of Belair regarding a disturbance, after neighbors reported James Eshelman had confronted a woman in the street and was throwing garbage cans around as well.

Several officers responded and were familiar with Eshelman, as they had contacted him several times in the past. Initially, when officers arrived they made contact with Eshelman through a window. During this conversation, police say Eshelman had a large knife. Shortly afterwards, Eshelman made his way to the front door, still carrying the knife. Police say Eshelman was in a fighting stance three feet away from an officer and did not follow instructions to drop the weapon. It was at that time Corporal Aaron Hintz fired his gun at Eshelman and struck him.

The press release indicated officers provided first aid to Eshelman, including CPR, until medics arrived on scene. Eshelman was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The Moses Lake Police Department says Cpl. Hintz has been an officer with the department for nine years, and is a member of the Moses Lake Regional Tactical Response Team.

The investigation into the shooting continues, and more details are expected to be released around January 13th. We will update you as soon as we receive any additional information.
