UPDATE: Giffords To Mark Shooting Anniversary By Skydiving

KHQ.COM - Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will skydive on national TV to mark the third anniversary of a shooting that killed six and left her with years of recovery in front of her.

Giffords's jump will air on NBC's "Today Show" on Thursday. Wednesday is the three-year anniversary of the shootings at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., where Giffords had been holding a town hall.

Giffords will also answer questions with "Today Show" host and Tucson native Savannah Guthrie.

Guthrie said Wednesday that Giffords will compete the jump with a Navy Seal who was injured in Afghanistan.

Giffords left Congress in 2012 and has since focused on advocating for increased gun control, along with her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly.

MORE DETAILS:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Residents across the city of Tucson are commemorating the third anniversary of the shooting that killed 6 people and wounded 12 others, including former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Bells rang and flags were raised Wednesday at 10:10 a.m., which was the time when a gunman opened fire on Jan. 8, 2011 at a meet-and-greet event being held by Giffords.

About 100 people gathered on the front lawn of the University of Arizona Medical Center, where victims of the shooting were treated.

A pastor read a prayer and the names of those killed and injured. A bell rang once for each name followed by a moment of silence.

Community members say such events are not just a way to remember the victims, but to look forward and learn from the tragedies.
