SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth football coach Rod Sandberg has retained Jason Tobeck as part of the Pirates’ coaching staff for the 2014 season and promoted Tobeck to the position of special teams coordinator.

Tobeck is Sandberg’s second major decision as he fills out his coaching staff for the upcoming season. He had previously named Alan Stanfield as his offensive coordinator.

Tobeck has served on the Whitworth football coaching staff since 1994, completing his 20th year as a coach at his alma mater in 2013. He will continue his current role as the Pirates’ receivers coach and as Whitworth’s recruiting coordinator for football. He will also continue in his role as the athletic department’s liaison to the school’s admissions office.

Tobeck will take on the newly created role of special teams coordinator, overseeing all aspects of Whitworth’s special teams in 2014.

“Jason is a great teacher of fundamentals and extremely organized and I know he will do an excellent job as special teams coordinator - an extremely important phase of the game,” Sandberg said. “Jason bleeds crimson and black and is a Pirate through and through. He embodies the mission of Whitworth University and will pour himself into the lives of our players. Additionally, his leadership in the area of recruiting is invaluable to our staff and to me personally.”

During Tobeck’s tenure as the Pirates’ receivers coach, Whitworth has had 11 different receivers earn First Team All-Conference honors under his tutelage. The latest was Jake DeGooyer in 2012. He was also position coach for 2007 NFL draft choice Michael Allan (Kansas City Chiefs), who was a two-time consensus Division III All-American.

“I am excited to build new relationships with our football staff, current players and future prospective athletes,” Tobeck said. “Additionally, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the staff and faculty at Whitworth as we live out the mission of the university to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity.”

Tobeck was a record-setting receiver at Whitworth when he graduated in 1993. He set an NAIA Division II record (at that time) with 22 catches in one game against Willamette his senior season. He also finished second in the nation that year with 89 total catches, earning All-Columbia Football Association honors.
