Pharmacy Employees Getting Training In Wake Of 6 Recent Robberies

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

After six Spokane-area pharmacy robberies in just eight days, some pharmacy employees are being trained on what to do if they are targeted next.

Spokane County Deputy Chris Johnston is heading up the effort in the Spokane Valley area and has personally met with the managers of at least six pharmacies in the last week or so. Among his tips: cooperate with the robber to get them out of the store as quickly as possible, don't risk your own personal safety, don't talk to coworkers in the moments after a robbery until you can give your own clear account of what happened to police, take a mental note of the suspect's description and report any suspicious activity before a robbery happens.

"I actually had one instance where a woman matching the description of a recent pharmacy robbery suspect walked in to a local pharmacy with a gun visibly seen on her person, said some strange things and walked out," Deputy Johnston said. "But a report was never filed."

Monday, Spokane Police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with Friday's robbery of the pharmacy inside Albertsons on North Nevada. However, there are still three of four other people caught on surveillance at the five other pharmacies that have been targeted in the area since the first of the year who police are still looking for.

"We've been very fortunate to this point, we haven't seen anyone be seriously hurt or killed in this latest string," Deputy Johnston added.

Police said it was citizen tips and reports to Crime Check that led to this first arrest, and they're hoping you can help lead to more. Call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 if you can help.

August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home.
