Spokane Mom Delivers Baby In Car 5 Weeks Early, Just In Time For Seahawks Game

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash - Kirstin Simmons knew she was having a baby girl, but she didn't think that baby was coming until February 23rd. She was wrong."I guess with my fourth, things just get a little quicker," she told KHQ's Kelsey Watts.

So when she woke up in the middle of the night Friday, her plans didn't include labor. But Baby Harper had other plans, and Kirstin knew about an hour later she was going into labor - five weeks early. She got into the car with her husband, Hank, and their 1 1/2 year old son, and started driving toward Sacred Heart Medical Center - but only made it a mile.

"When she first said, 'It's coming,' I said, 'No, hold on,' but when I heard her water break, she said again, 'It's coming,'" Hank recalled. It all happened so quickly, he pulled over onto the side of the road, but didn't even have time to get out of the car before his beautiful daughter was born."Once he pulled over, I saw her, and I just picked her up and put her on my chest," Kirstin said.Hank called 911, and paramedics arrived within minutes to cut the cord and help the family get to the hospital.

Amazingly, both mommy and baby were doing well. For now, because she was five weeks ahead of schedule, Baby Harper is in the NICU at Sacred Heart, but is expected to be released soon to join her family - including teenage siblings Trenton and Cali. Mom and Dad both think their little miracle was on the Seahawks championship schedule the whole time; and now they hope Baby Harper will be home in time to be the good luck charm in the Seahawks biggest game in years.

"I think she was our good luck charm for the Seahawks game Sunday,"Kirstin added. "We're hoping she's here before the Super Bowl."
