Sandberg, Whitworth Name New Defensive Coordinator

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth football coach Rod Sandberg has named Adam Richbart, a protégé from Wheaton College, as his new defensive coordinator.

Richbart joins Sandberg’s Pirate football staff after serving six years as an assistant coach at Wheaton.

“Adam is the smartest coach I have ever worked with and will have our defense playing at an extremely high level,” said Sandberg. “I like to refer to him as a mad scientist and his defense will create a lot of challenges for the offensive coordinators in the NWC.”

Richbart spent the 2013 season as the Thunder wide receivers coach and he coached defensive backs from 2007 through 2011. He missed the 2012 Wheaton season while serving a mission in Tanzania.

“I am excited to follow Rod to Spokane because I want to be a part of something special,” Richbart said. “I trust him and I believe in his vision that playing football at Whitworth University should be one of the greatest experiences of a young man’s life.”

Richbart coached four different defensive backs to First Team All-CCIW honors between 2007 and 2011, including two-time honoree Pete Ittersagen. He led three other players to Second Team All-CCIW honors.

Richbart graduated from Wheaton College in 2007 with a degree in Physics. He was also a thrower on the track and field team.

“I am very excited to be joining the Whitworth staff,” Richbart said. “It is an awesome opportunity and I look forward to preparing young men to strive for excellence as football players, as leaders on campus and in churches, and as future husbands and fathers, by encouraging them to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity.”
