SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women’s basketball team turned up the intensity in the second half on the way to a 90-62 Northwest Conference win over Lewis & Clark College on Saturday evening in Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Whitworth improves to 12-5 on the season, with a 6-2 Northwest Conference record. Lewis & Clark ends its eastern Washington trip with a 9-8 overall record, falling to 4-4 in the NWC.

Lewis & Clark got off to a fast and furious start, shooting 60 percent (3-5) from behind the three-point arc, and took a 22-11 lead over Whitworth. The Pirates stayed steady and, after finding themselves behind 27-17, Whitworth went on a 9-0 run with baskets sophomore Lexie Zappone and junior Katara Belton-Sharp. Junior Jessica Kramer capped off an 11-0 run with a layup and the bonus free throw, giving Whitworth its first lead of the night, 28-27. After a handful of lead changes and tied scores in the final five minutes of the opening half, Whitworth took a 37-34 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers cut the Pirate lead to two points in the opening minutes of the second half, but Whitworth found its offensive rhythm and turned up the defensive pressure. Senior Kendra Lahue gave the Pirates their first double digit lead of the game, making the layup while getting fouled and sinking the free throw. The Pirates maintained control for the rest of the half, keeping a double digit lead over Lewis & Clark.

Whitworth shot a season-best 53.8 percent (35-65) from the floor and had a season-low six turnovers. Lewis & Clark had 19 turnovers, 12 of which came in the second half. Whitworth scored 22 points off of Pioneer turnovers. The Pioneers also had 16 offensive boards, but only converted them into 11 second chance points. Whitworth used 13 offensive boards to score 20 second chance points.

Four Pirates scored in double figures, led by senior Kayla Johnson’s 20 points. Kendra Lahue scored 16 points for Whitworth, 15 of which came in the second half. Sophomore KC McConnell added 15 points, and Lexie Zappone chipped in 13 points. Johnson led the Pirates with eight rebounds, while Katara Belton-Sharp pulled down seven boards. Kayla Johnson led the Pirates with a career-high seven assist. Johnson and Lexie Zappone combined for all of Whitworth’s six steals.
