SPOKANE, Wash. -

For most new parents, bringing a new baby home from the hospital is a very exciting day.

But, when Kendra and her husband Joe welcomed their baby boy, Cable Douglas Weitz into the world on December 18.

But, they had to wait longer than usual to bring their baby home - 38 days to be exact.

"He was born 2 months early, so he's premature," explained Kendra. "My water broke at home, I just happened to start having labor pains, went to the hospital in Coeur D'Alene and had to be transferred to Deaconess because I was only 31 weeks gestation."

Ever since then, it has been an emotional roller coaster for the new parents.

"We wanted a baby for a long time, so we feel very fortunate to have him," explained Kendra. "But it was scary at 1st when it was 31 weeks, we didn't know what was going to happen."

When Cable was born, he weighed less than 5 pounds so he had to stay in intensive care at the hospital for weeks.

And so, Joe and Kendra were driving every day from their home in Rathdrum to Deaconess hospital to see their baby. Not surprisingly, the long commute was starting to wear them down.

They briefly considered booking a hotel, but were wary of how costly that could become.

Noticing how tired Kendra and Joe appeared as the days wore on, one of the nurses suggested they stay at the Ronald McDonald. Kendra did not think that they qualified but she quickly learned she was wrong as the Ronald McDonald House is for anyone in need.

And, the Weitz's were certainly in need. They were put on a waiting list and within 4 days were granted a spot in the house for $32 per night.

"This house is for everybody, all income levels, all statuses, whether you can afford a hotel or not, this is the place that is closest to the hospital," explained Kendra. "You run into other people and you realize they're in the same situation as you are, and you realize it's just a really caring place."

After staying for a week, the Weitz's saw having a room at the Ronald McDonald House as a privilege.

"We were a little apprehensive about coming here at first because we didn't want to take a room from someone who was maybe more in need," said Joe. "Because we didn't know we were in need."

But, as it turns out, the Ronald McDonald House was exactly what Joe and Kendra needed, as did their baby.

"Us being here and being so close to him, just last week we got to spend more time with him," said Joe. "In turn, I think he did a lot better this last week."

And, when they left the Ronald McDonald House after a week, they finally got to bring their baby home, home to Idaho.
