GONE TOO SOON: Service Held For Beloved Children Who Fell In Pond

Eleana Rose Maravilla & Jose Reyes III Eleana Rose Maravilla & Jose Reyes III
PLUMMER, Idaho -

UPDATE: Services for Jose Reyes III and Eleana Rose Maravilla were held on Thursday. On Wednesday, there was a Rosary & Wake at the Rose Creek Longhouse. Thursday morning there will be a Mass at Rose Creek Longhouse and an interment at Desmet Cemetery.

In order to allow all students and staff to attend the services, the Plummer-Worley School District closed all schools (Lakeside Elementary, Middle, and High School). School will resume on Friday.

Below is a statement released by Tribe Chairman Chief Allan:

“Earlier this week, our community was rocked by a tragedy no one saw coming. We are saddened beyond belief at the passing of young Jose Reyes and Eleana Maravilla. Losing these two innocent young children has truly brought a sense of inexplicable grief, angst and incredible sadness that has spread throughout our entire community.

There are really no words that can soften the loss of a loved one. For those of you who take comfort in the Bible, remember the words from Matthew 19:14, “And Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.’" If there is any measure of comfort to be had from words, perhaps we may be comforted by the thought that Jose and Eleana have moved on to a better place.

Tomorrow morning we will gather together to remember the lives of two young children, to mourn their passing, and to comfort those family members they have left behind. There is no one too small to leave a footprint on our hearts and indeed, so many of us were touched by the lives of Jose and Eleana.

To the family, we want you to know we are here for you to help you through this difficult time. Grief is not a sign of weakness. Our hearts are broken and we are grieving beside you for these young children who were taken from us much too soon.

Your Tribe, your family, your friends and your community are all here to support you and to comfort you in whatever way we can. We offer you our prayers and our love to the family and the community. We will keep the faces of these little ones close to our hearts as we honor their memory.”

Below is a statement from Bonnie Wilcoxson sent to KHQ Reporter Gabe Cohen:

Thank you for the opportunity to let the larger world know what a wonderful young man Jose is; his immediate world already knows. His grandmother has given me permission to talk with you; even so, I do not speak for others, only myself. This will not be a blurb; Jose’s life was far more than a blurb.

Jose is a wonderful boy in every sense, a happy boy – such infectious joy! You couldn’t help but catch it. Big smile. BIG smile that reflected a happy heart. He often greeted his friends with, “Hi, friend!”

He was a good student. He knew his education was important; his grandmother made sure of that and he followed through. He gave everything his best shot. In class, when another student would give a correct answer, he would yell, “Gwinikw!”, Coeur d’Alene for “that’s true” or “good job!”. When I’d ask for a thumbs up to gauge which students felt they understood what I was teaching and which didn’t, he’d say, “Capiche?”

He loved the Seahawks; our whole school has Seahawk fever and wore our team tee shirts and jerseys the Friday before the Super Bowl. Heartbreaking all over again is that, at the hour the team was preparing to go on field in New Jersey, our sweet boy was fighting for his life and his little sister’s in a pond in the woods in Idaho. Jose loved his little sister dearly. He took seriously his responsibility as a big brother to care for her and look after her and their bond was steadfast. He was so proud of her; once she knew I was Jose’s teacher she would run to hug me around the legs every time she saw me.

Gabe, all children are vessels of hope and promise but it’s only if they are well-loved and well-taught that their hope and promise are realized. Jose and Eleana were well-taught; we made sure of that. They were well-loved and knew they were loved; their grandmother, their family, their friends made sure of that. And they gave that love to everyone around them.

The world really is a lesser place without them but they have left behind such memories for us to build upon. Gabe, make sure the world knows that these were two truly amazing children. They are loved still and so very missed.

Thank you,

B

PREVIOUS STORY:

Two children died this weekend after falling through ice on a pond near Plummer, Idaho on Sunday.

Both of the kids attended Lakeside Elementary School and on Monday, the district sent out a letter to parents saying the district response team, administrators and teachers immediately went into gear to make sure students and staff were in a supportive environment.

The incident occurred at a pond along Old Agency Loop Road in southwest Plummer. The pond was not entirely frozen over. In fact there is an aerator in the water to keep it from freezing because of the fish in it.

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe says the two children ran out onto the ice to retrieve their dog and fell through the ice. The two were trapped under the surface and their grandmother dove in after them, but by the time they were pulled out, they were unresponsive.

The children and their grandmother were taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where the children passed away. The grandmother survived but was battling hypothermia.
