Wilson Elementary Transforms Into 'Russell Wilson' Elementary School To Support Seahawks

SPOKANE, Wash. - There are a lot of committed Seattle Seahawks fans in the state of Washington, but the kids at Wilson Elementary School are certainly Spokane's loudest fans.

This week, Principal Tony Ressa changed the name of the school to Russell Wilson Elementary School to support the Seahawks.

"All [the kids] are Seahawks bonkers anyway," said Principal Ressa. "The fact that we could tie it in to the name of our school is really exciting."

It also worked out nicely that out of all the Seahawks players, Principal Ressa is a big Rusell Wilson fan.

"What he represents, his message: you don't have to be the biggest to excel, you don't have to be the strongest, but if you persevere, you can succeed," explained Ressa.

The Seahawks fandom for this school does not stop at the name-change, though.

All this week they have had mini pep-rally's at lunch which involve the students cheering along with Principal Ressa to Phish's "Wilson" song in the cafeteria.

"You see everybody, they have their hair dyed, the girls have their nails done, literally everyone is wearing Seahawks colors," said 5th grader David Dunlap.

"It's fun to come to school and go to lunch, and hear everyone shout 'Wilson,'" echoed 3rd grader Luke Marshall.

And apart from being a die-hard Seahawks and Phish fan, Principal Ressa has embraced the Super Bowl spirit for just this reason - because it is fun.

"School should be fun," said Ressa. "We ask them to do some pretty hard stuff, we have high expectations, and if we don't make it fun, then we're fighting a losing battle."

There is no denying these kids are having a lot of fun.

"[This is] way more fun," said 4th grader Liam Cleary. "I'm not saying it's bad to go to school, but [this] is really fun."

Most of the students just want to wish the Seahawks good luck.

"I would say be confident," suggests 4th grader Riley Gulick to Russell Wilson. "Don't be too nervous, and just play a good game. Be yourself."
