WELLINGTON, New Zealand -
A man who washed ashore on the Marshall Islands says he's a castaway who's been adrift in the ocean for more than a year.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga says he left Mexico on a fishing trip and became lost at sea when the boat's engine died. He drifted around six-thousand miles in a 24 foot boat. His companion starved to death after four months because Alvarenga says he couldn't keep raw fish down.

He says he survived on raw fish, birds, turtles, rainwater, his own urine and prayers. A government official said he's not fully coherent.

NBC News contacted names of relatives he gave authorities and a number of them say they recognized him. His brother-in-law says it's incredible.

Officials are reacting cautiously to the man's story, but they say if true, it would rank among the greatest tales ever of survival at sea.
