UPDATE: Bank Robber Sentenced To Over 10 Years

SPOKANE, Wash. -

It’s not often you hear people charged with crimes openly admit they did it and apologize, but that’s exactly what Alex Treadway, 31, has maintained since being jailed in late November for two counts of first-degree bank robbery.

Police say Treadway robbed the Banner Bank on N. Division on November 14th, then the Washington Trust Bank on N. Maple on November 25th. In both cases he handed the teller a note, never displayed a weapon and made no attempt to hide his face or conceal his appearance.

The day he was arrested Treadway spoke with KHQ from jail saying the combination of substance abuse and the death of his parents made him desperate.

“I did it knowing I was going to get caught. Jail’s not a good place to be, but neither is the streets when you're going through the type of stuff I'm going through,” Treadway told KHQ from jail November 30th.

In court Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to both counts and was sentenced to nearly 11 years (129 months) in prison. Additionally, he’s ordered to never have contact with either bank – or the two tellers involved – ever again, and must pay back the $3,900 he stole.

“I just want to apologize to the bank tellers if this affected their lives in any way, just specifically to those two people and I just want to emphasize that,” Treadway told the court during his sentencing, looking back at the KHQ camera. “It's not a statement it's just how I feel and hopefully they'll get that message."

“It’s just a sad situation,” Treadway’s defense lawyer, Kyle Zeller, told the court. “Speaking to Mr. Treadway you would never believe he went into a couple of banks and did this… he was just desperate.”

Previous Coverage:

Alex Treadway, the man police say robbed two banks in Spokane in 2013 was sentenced to 10.75 years in prison on Wednesday.

Treadway pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday and apologized for his crimes, saying that he never meant to hurt the tellers in the bank.

Following bank robberies in November 2013 at the Banner Bank on N. Division and the Washington Trust Bank on N. Maple, police quickly zeroed in on Treadway after getting clear pictures of him on surveillance video.

Shortly after being arrested, Treadway spoke with KHQ's Lindsay Nadrich and told her he robbed the banks out of desperation because of his circumstances. He said neither robbery was planned and both were spur of the moment decisions.

In that interview, Treadway told KHQ, “I obviously knew I was going to get caught from the beginning. I'm not really in my rational state of mind just to walk up to a bank with no mask on and think I'm not going to get caught, so I won't do it again I know that.”

The judge sentenced Treadway to over 10 years in prison.
