KEEPING VIGIL: No One Dies Alone

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Death can be a hard subject to talk about. But the truth of the matter is, death is a part of life.

In Wednesday's Keeping Vigil, a special group of volunteers make it their mission to see that 'no one dies alone.'

Donna Mejday is the Program Director for No One Dies Alone. She trains volunteers at Sacred Heart to sit with the dying.

"They offer comfort, companionship and love. They watch if a person has needs, like if they start fidgeting or they start sweating or their breathing changes or they cant call the nurse because they are too weak,"  Mejday told KHQ's Stephanie Vigil.

"It's a privilege and it's an honor. It's also very humbling because you have an opportunity to sit with someone as they are transitioning from this life to the next and representing a family member who cannot be there. Being at that sacred presence and that compassionate companion is very, very rewarding," volunteer Kris Fisher said.

Whether it be verses from the bible, a story being read or the sound of silence, the volunteers offer a compassionate presence.

If you would like to know more about the No One Dies Alone program through Sacred Heart medical center, call 509-474-3166.
