KHQ Crime Tracker: The ASK Campaign

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

The "Asking Saves Kids" Campaign is a push to pressure parents into finding out whether there is a gun where their child plays. Until now, much of the pressure has been placed upon children by parents, trusting that they will do the right thing if they come across a gun. Spokane Police advise teaching children not to touch a gun and to tell an adult if they see a gun where it doesn’t belong. It’s good advice, but the people behind the ASK campaign say parents can go a step further and find out directly from other parents if there is a gun in the home where their child plans to play.

A playgroup made up of Spokane mothers and children admit that asking a person if they have a gun in the home can be a tough question. Joy Winks is the mother of a 3-year-old and is a gun owner. She says asking a person if they own a gun is a controversial subject considering so many people hold passionate views for and against gun control. However, Winks admits it is a question worth asking and a question she welcomes from other mothers.

Melissa Lyons is a mother of two and owns a gun. She practices gun safety and says she would feel comfortable asking the question and answering it.

Sora Smith is the mother of 4 children. She doesn’t have a gun in her house and says it’s important for mothers to ask questions on behalf of their children. She says even if your home meets your safety standards for your children, it doesn’t mean it’s safe for other people’s children. That’s why; Sora says it’s important you be your child’s advocate.

While gun owners and people who don’t own guns both support asking if there’s a gun where their child plays, it’s important to point out that KHQ doesn’t specifically endorse all of the elements of the campaign.
