Official: Passenger Tried To Divert Plane To Sochi; Reports Of Bomb On Board

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's state-run television says the country's authorities have detained a Ukrainian passenger who tried to hijack an Istanbul-bound plane to Sochi, Russia, where the Olympics are kicking off.

TRT television says the authorities convinced the passenger to give himself up and that the man was now in police custody.

The station did not cite a source for the report and there was no confirmation from the Transport Ministry.

Pegasus Airlines also would not confirm the report.

PREVIOUS STORY:

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - A Turkish official says a plane that was the target of a hijack attempt is now on the ground at an airport in Istanbul, where authorities are trying to persuade the alleged hijacker to give himself up.

The official says 110 passengers are still on board. A TV station (NTV) reports that the man has been subdued, but there's no confirmation of that.

Russia's Interfax news agency quotes Ukrainian authorities as saying the passenger was drunk. It's also reporting that he has now been subdued, and that no weapons or explosives were found on him.

The Transport Ministry official says the passenger claimed there was a bomb on board the flight, which was headed from Ukraine to Istanbul, and that he wanted the plane to fly to the Russian city of Sochi, where the Olympics are getting under way.

According to the official, the man rose from his seat and shouted that there was a bomb on board, and then tried to enter the locked cockpit. The pilot signaled that there was a hijack attempt, and the airport was placed on high alert.

Pegasus Airlines confirms that there was a "bomb threat" aboard the flight.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.
