KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho - The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Kootenai County which includes the urban areas and small streams in Rathdrum, Post Falls, Hayden, Dalton Gardens and Coeur d'Alene. A press release sent out on Tuesday afternoon indicated the warning is in effect until 1:00pm on Sunday, February 16th, 2014.

The press release said recent above normal temperatures have frozen the ground, allowing little capacity to absorb any recent melting snow. The Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management also said storm sewers, culverts and drainage ditches that are frozen may be plugged with ice and snow and overflow.

If flooding does happen, ponding on the roadways may occur, and the Office of Emergency Management wants citizens to avoid driving or walking through flowing water. They also advised residents living in low lying areas prone to flooding may want to consider buying sand and sandbags as precautionary measures. For more on the proper use of sandbags, click this link: www.oem.kcgov.us
