The incident is being investigated by the Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) Team.Just after 7:00 pm on Tuesday, 911 received a call from a male indicating he was suicidal, had weapons and wanted law enforcement to kill him.

Local law enforcement agencies attempted to locate the male. He indicated he was traveling on I-90 into the Spokane Valley. The male continued contact with 911 dispatch as he traveled eastbound on I-90. North Idaho law enforcement agencies located the male on I-90 in Idaho. Spokane Valley Sheriff’s deputies took over the pursuit at the state line. The male exited the freeway at Sullivan and stopped at the intersection at Indiana and Sullivan. A short time later, deputies advised that shots had been fired and requested medics respond to the scene. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has additional information to call Crime Check at 456-2233.

Due to the fact that this was an Officer Involved Shooting (O.I.S.), the Officer Involved Fatal Incident Protocol was enacted. The SIRR Team is on-scene investigating the incident. The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Liberty Lake Police Department, Airway Heights Police Department, and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The Spokane Police Department is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications on this incident will be sent out via the SIRR Team. The Spokane County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the deceased individual. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will release the names of the deputies involved in this incident. Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

PREVIOUS STORY:

One man was shot and killed following a high speed pursuit that ended near the Spokane Valley Mall on Tuesday night.
It started around 7:00 PM when Spokane Police received a call from a man who was in a car claiming to be unstable and threatening suicide by forcing police to shoot him.

Officers from Spokane and Deputies from Spokane County responded and located the car the man was in. They followed him as he drove all the way to Coeur d'Alene before turning around.

Sheriff's Deputies picked up the pursuit again when he crossed back into Washington.

Finally, man got off of the Sullivan exit near the Spokane Valley Mall and got out of his car. Moments later deputies say he made a threatening move and they opened fire.

Deputy Mark Gregory told KHQ on scene that the man, who has not yet been identified, was heavily armed.

Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich confirmed the man was a veteran who had earned the Purple Heart after serving in Afghanistan

Shortly after being shot, the man was taken to the hospital, where we are told he was pronounced dead.

Critical incident protocol has been invoked, and Major Crimes Detectives from the Spokane Police Department will be the lead agency in the investigation.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner is expected to release the man's identity on Wednesday.
