NEWPORT, Wash. - Blood in the snow showed an inmate cut himself on razor wire climbing a fence to escape from the Pend Oreille County Jail in Newport in northeast Washington.

Pend Oreille and Bonner County, Idaho, deputies and Border Patrol units with tracking dogs followed the trail for several miles Wednesday before it was lost.

The inmate, 29-year-old Ryan A. Apling, was being held for failure to appear on original charges of trespass and driving while license suspended.

Apling is described as 5-foot-10, 140 pounds, with blue eyes and short blonde hair. He is believed to have changed out of his orange jail uniform into blue jeans and a black hoodie.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Schools in Newport were put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after an inmate escaped from the Pend Oreille County Jail. We are told the school was taken off of lockdown status at about 4:30pm.

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff's dispatch confirmed that every available officer in the area was looking for an escaped inmate on Wednesday. The Sheriff's Department also said the inmate was last seen near Old Town, Idaho by Highway 41. As of 5:30pm on Wednesday, the search has been suspended and law enforcement at this time are waiting for leads.

The inmate has been identified as 29-year-old Ryan Apling. Deputies say Apling scaled multiple fences with razor wire to escape. Deputies say they believe Apling received injuries from the razor wire because they found what appeared to be blood in the snow outside of the jail.

Deputies from Pend Oreille County, Bonner County and US Border Patrol K-9 Units tracked Apling for several miles before his trail was lost.

Apling was last seen wearing jeans and a black hoodie. Right now police don't know where he got those clothes, as he was wearing orange jail issued garments at the time of his escape.

A press release sent out on Wednesday night said Apling was in the Pend Oreille County Jail for Criminal Trespassing and Driving With A Suspended License.
The Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating Apling. If seen please call the Sheriff’s Office at 509-447-1980.
