Atilano's Mexican Food Left Cleaning Up After Thief Steals Cash And Smashes A Wall

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – Early Saturday morning, employees at Atilano’s Mexican Food on Sprague came to work and discovered someone had broken in through the back door, smashed through a wall, and stolen more than a $1,000 in cash. The owner says this is actually the third time in three months that this Atilano's location has been burglarized.

“This time they just made a small hole right here, but the first time when they broke in, they made a bigger hole, then just came in through here,” said Adrian Gonzalez the co-owner of Atilano’s Mexican Food.

Once again, Gonzalez will have to patch up a hole, left by a thief.

“It's the same person because they used the same method, which was, you know, break in through the office,” Gonzalez said.

After breaking through the back wall, the suspect headed straight for the cash registers.

“You can kind of see what they did, you know, they clipped it, and they can just take the cash drawer,” Gonzalez said.

The restaurant usually has less than $200 in cash on hand, but last night they had more than $1,000 because they were having more food delivered Saturday.

“They also took some cash we had in the office for our meat delivery today,” Gonzalez said.

On top of the stolen money, it also costs nearly $500 dollars to replace each of the stolen cash register drawers. Leaving Adrian no choice, but to increase security in case this thief comes back again.

“What we're going to do is just leave the cash drawers open and not leave any money here,” Gonzalez said.

While the restaurant prepares to make changes, they hope the burglar will make some changes as well.

“If he's watching this, I have a lot of work here,” Gonzalez said. “He doesn't need to be out there robbing. I mean, just come in and apply and I'll give you a job instead of out there doing that.”

The restaurant closes at midnight and opens again at 6:00 a.m., so there is only a small window of time where someone could have broken in without anyone being there. As a result, the owner thinks it was a customer or someone who has been watching the restaurant very closely.

They are also now considering putting in security cameras and adding new locks to all of the doors.
