Holmberg Nets 50th Goal, 100th Point in Chiefs Win

By SpokaneChiefs.com

SPOKANE, Wash. – Mitch Holmberg scored his 50th goal and 100th point of the season, Eric Williams made 34 saves, Adam Helewka notched a trio of assists and the Spokane Chiefs topped the Everett Silvertips for the 18th straight time at Spokane Arena, this one by a 5-3 score on Sunday night.

Holmberg scored two goals, the latter in an empty net as Everett was scrambling to tie the game late. Tack on his assist on a 3rd-Period Marcus Messier goal and the right wing collected his 100th point of the season, which puts him in a tie for first in the WHL with Portland's Nicolas Petan. Holmberg now has 136 career goals, and needs 11 more to become the Chiefs' all-time leading goal scorer. Pat Falloon currently holds the record with 146 goals.

Everett got on the board quick, as Joshua Winquist scored 1 minute, 19 seconds into the game. But Williams wouldn't allow another goal until halfway through the third period as the Chiefs were outshot 37-25 in the game. He deflected away all 14 shots in the second period, and kept Everett out of the net during their four power play chances.

Two of Helewka's three assists came on Holmberg's goals and the third came on Messier's goal in the third frame. Mike Aviani also scored in the win, the first time he's scored at home since a January 4th win over the Silvertips.

The Chiefs host Prince Albert this Wednesday, February 19th, at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the ninth of ten TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaways as the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a refrigerator magnet featuring one of their favorite players.
