COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

If losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare, the thought of losing a second is beyond comprehension. But that’s the tough reality the Swank family has been dealing with over the last few years.

Drew Swank was just 17 when a severe head injury sustained during football took his life in 2009. His oldest sister, Tara, was the glue that held her family together. Now, her family is rallying around her as she fights for her own life against stage four breast cancer.

She was diagnosed two years ago and found out the cancer had metastasized to her liver. Through a double mastectomy, chemo, radiation and liver treatments, she’s still fighting her battle – even as new tumors have been found.

Her family says financial worries are the last thing Tara should be concerned with as she starts chemo once again. That’s why her family is throwing a benefit for her this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge on Sherman in downtown Coeur D’Alene. There will be food, live music, an auction and “Tara’s Fight” t-shirts on sale for $25.
