SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Gonzaga University baseball dropped its third consecutive game Sunday as the Zags fell 11-8 to University of the Incarnate Word in the Irish Baseball Classic.

GU finishes the tournament 1-3 and sits at 2-6 overall.

The Bulldogs held a five run advantage, 8-3, heading into the sixth inning but Incarnate Word stormed back to take a three run lead.

The eight-run inning was manufactured with two outs. Bryce Shepherd and Mark Whitehead each connected for a two RBI base hit which chased Gonzaga starter Derek Callahan (0-2) from the game.

The troublesome inning continued for Zag reliever David Bigelow. The right-hander was touched for four runs (two charged to Callahan) on a hit batter and a bases clearing double to Slade Brown. The frustrating inning ended when Bigelow induced a fielder's choice groundout to third base.

Prior to the inning Callahan was in firm control. Unfortunately the lefty was responsible for nine earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.

GU had a nice start to the game as it was the first team to score.

Cardinal start Jacob Potts recorded the first two outs in the top of the first inning but then allowed three consecutive hits to Mitchell Gunsolus, Cory LeBrun and Payden Cawley Lamb. The RBI was a team-high sixth for Lamb.

Gonzaga extended its early lead to 5-0 in the top of the third. The first three runners reached for the Bulldogs followed by a LeBrun bases clearing double. Beau Bozett brought LeBrun home later in the frame with an RBI through the left side.

Incarnate Word pushed across its first runs of the game in the third on one swing of the bat. Jesse Hoover connected for a three-run homer cutting the Gonzaga lead 5-3.

The Zags appeared to add three insurance runs in the fifth inning. Nick Brooks, Sam Brown and Gunsolus all recorded an RBI. The 8-3 lead was short lived however as the Cardinals had its eight run rally an inning later.

Gonzaga out-hit the Cardinals 13-7 in the game. Gunsolus paced the club with four hits while Bozett, Brown and LeBrun each had two hits. Freshman Wyatt Mills made his second appearance of the year by reliving Bigelow for two outs in the eighth.

Gonzaga is back on the diamond Feb. 27 in Surprise, Ariz. The Bulldogs will play in the Spring Training Classic hosted by Arizona State University and open the weekend with Oklahoma State University Thursday at 3 p.m.
