Holmberg, Zwerger Net Hat Trick in Chiefs Win

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – Mitch Holmberg completed a hat trick in the first period – for the second night in a row – Dominic Zwerger added his first hat trick of the season, and the Chiefs scored a season-high nine goals while defeating the Kamloops Blazers 9-4 on Sunday night at the Spokane Arena on Garage Sale Night presented by The Washington Health Plan Finder.

Holmberg, who completed a hat trick in the first period on Saturday night against Kootenay, managed to once again accomplish the achievement in just 20 minutes. Holmberg's first goal of the night – which was reviewed initially after the puck bounced out of the net off of the crossbar – came just 7 seconds before Zwerger found the net for his second goal of the night. The 7 seconds separating the goals ties a Spokane Chiefs franchise record. But that wasn't the only record that took notice.

Holmberg's three goals moved him even closer to becoming Spokane's all-time goal scorer, as he jumped to third on the all-time list, passing Ray Whitney. The right wing is now just five goals away from breaking Pat Falloon's record of 146 with nine regular season games remaining. Holmberg added in an assist on the night, giving him four total points and moving him to fifth all-time in points scored wearing a Chiefs uniform. His five hat tricks this season are one shy of the franchise record - six by Ray Whitney in '90-'91.

Zwerger's hat trick pushed the rookie's goal total to 15. Captain Reid Gow collected his sixth goal of the year, Carter Proft added his 11th, and Adam Helewka his 21st. Riley Whittingham had his eyes wide open all evening, as the right wing added three assists to his résumé and earned 3rd Star honors. Garret Hughson was in net for Spokane - Eric Williams took the night off - and saved 33 of 37 shots.

Spokane was able to come away with two goals off of seven power play opportunities. On the other side, the Chiefs penalty kill struggled, as three of Kamloops' goals came with the advantage.

Only four home games remain for the Chiefs as they continue the season next Saturday, February 28th, at the Spokane Arena against the Portland Winterhawks for Jersey Off The Back Night. Portland is currently on a franchise record 20-game winning streak.
