NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Nick Murphy’s RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Cal State Northridge to a 3-2 victory over Washington State in nonconference baseball at Matador Field, Thursday.

The Matadors (5-4) received a one-out single from Ranny Lowe to start the rally. With two outs and Murphy batting, Lowe stole second. Murphy then lined a 1-2 pitch from Washington State (1-6) reliever Ian Hamilton (1-1) to left field. Ben Roberts threw a strike to catcher P.J. Jones, but Lowe was able to avoid the tag and score the game-winning run. John Salas (1-0), the fifth Matador pitcher, worked the top of the 10th and earned the victory.

For much of the afternoon, Cougar starter Jason Monda and Cal State Northridge starter Jerry Keel were locked up in pitchers’ duel. Keel pitched seven innings, gave up six hits, walked two and struck out six. Monda yielded four hits and two walks while striking out three in 6 2/3 innings.

The game remained 0-0 until the eighth inning when the Matadors tallied twice against reliever Kellen Camus. After allowing a leadoff single, Camus bobbled a sacrifice bunt and then made an errant throw that resulted in a double error to put runners at first and third. A sacrifice fly plated the first run. A stolen base was followed by a double to give Cal State Northridge a 2-0 lead.

Washington State’s bench helped the Cougars rally in the ninth to tie the game. Matt Mendenhall was hit by a pitch to open the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Michael Monda. Ben Roberts and Ian Sagdal each delivered a pinch hit single to load the bases. Trace Tam Sing drove in Monda with a fielder’s choice. After Trek Stemp was hit by a pitch, Collin Slaybaugh singled to tie the game. Shay Maltese preserved the tie by striking out Nick Tanielu and Yale Rosen with the bases loaded.

The Cougars collected 11 hits, but stranded 12 runners and had five others tagged out on the bases. The Matadors had 11 hits and took advantage of five Washington State errors. The series is scheduled to continue, Friday at 2 p.m.
