SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - 14 year-old Saige Betancourt had just gotten home from school on Wednesday when she let her chocolate lab named Chloe out in the back yard and heard barking and growling she didn't recognize.

Somehow the next door neighbor's pit bull named Mack was able to get into her backyard and was attacking Chloe. Seeing what was happening, Saige began screaming as she grabbed a broom to try and stop the attack, but the dog wouldn't let go of Chloe.

With nothing working and worried for her dog's life, Saige called her mom, who was at work, but by the time Elizabeth Betancourt got home, Spokane Valley Deputies and SCRAPS were on scene and that's when she learned her chocolate lab Chloe was dead.

After the pit bull was removed, SCRAPS officials deemed it a "dangerous dog" and it was later euthanized. SCRAPS says unprovoked attacks like this while an animal is in their own yard happen a few times a year and owners can face possible charges ranging from a civil infraction to a criminal misdemeanor.

Elizabeth Betancourt says Mack's owner was extremely sorry and even offered to pay for Chloe's cremation.

Left now with Chloe's son Rambo, Elizabeth just wants to make sure nothing like this happens again.

Right now the attack is still under investigation, and it's unclear right now if Mack's owners will face any charges.
