A man and woman both wanted on felony warrants out of Montana barricaded themselves inside a room at Motel 6 off Argonne & Knox early Tuesday morning sparking, a SWAT standoff that lasted for hours and ended with a shooting that landed one suspect in the hospital and the other in jail.

Spokane Valley Deputies were first called to the motel after midnight, on a report of a stolen car. They found the stolen Jeep with Nevada plates in the motel parking lot and learned the people associated with it, Bonnie Ulrick, 37, and Eric Heil, 32, had felony warrants and were armed. The SWAT and hostage negotiator teams were called in and deputies made contact with the pair via telephone around 2:00 a.m. but they barricaded the window to their room with a mattress and refused to come out.

After a 3 1/2 hour standoff, police say Ulrick pointed a pistol out of the window toward deputies and they fired, hitting her in the hand. She was treated by paramedics on the scene before being taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

"All we heard around 3:30 or 4 was a bunch of pops, not super loud but you could hear them,"said Lea Locke, who was staying at Motel 6 just a few rooms away. "I thought something was going on outside, but i didn't really think of a gun!"

Heil was arrested and taken to the Spokane County Jail. Police say Ulrick was wanted for contempt of court and Heil was wanted for a probation violation but their relationship remained unclear. A Montana probation officer says Heil was arrested June 18th for testing positive for methamphetamine, which is a parole violation, but was released and police have been looking for him ever since.

The two roads leading back to Motel 6 were blocked off for more than seven hours while police collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. People who lived or worked down the road from the motel were kept out - as were any hotel guests who left the perimeter.

The standoff and shooting happened just next door to Spokane Valley High School, an alternative school with about 250 students run by the West Valley School District. The district was notified of the police activity around 6:00 a.m. and canceled school for the day.

Washington State Patrol is taking the lead on the multi-agency investigation.

FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE PATROL: The Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) team is currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in the Spokane Valley. Just after midnight, Spokane Valley Police Department Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Motel 6 located at 1919 N Hutchinson to search for a reported stolen vehicle.

Deputies located the stolen vehicle in the motel parking lot and later learned that the individuals associated with the vehicle were armed and had outstanding felony warrants. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) SWAT team and Hostage Negotiation team responded to the scene. Deputies made several announcements via loudspeaker to get the individuals to surrender to officers.

SWAT and Hostage Negotiators were able to make contact via telephone just after 2:00 a.m., with a male and female who were now barricaded in the hotel room. The male suspect was identified as 32 year-old Eric Heil, the female suspect is 37-year-old Bonnie Ulrick. Negotiators spent nearly 3 1/2 hours attempting to resolve this incident peacefully.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., members of the SCSO SWAT team shot Ulrick who was armed with a pistol. Deputies immediately took Heil into custody and cleared the hotel room. Deputies found Ulrick who had sustained a gunshot wound to her hand. Paramedics who were already staged at the scene were able to provide immediate medical attention to Ulrick. Ulrick is being transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, to receive additional treatment for her non-life-threatening injuries.

The West Valley School District was advised of the incident and coordinated the closure of Spokane Valley High School that was adjacent to the hotel.

SIRR detectives from the Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Airway Heights Police Department and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office are working to finishing up the on-scene investigation. The Washington State Patrol is the managing agency for this incident. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will release the names of the deputy (s) involved in this incident.

After the SIRR investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor for review.

PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriffs Deputies were involved in a standoff at the Spokane Valley Motel 6 starting at 3 Tuesday morning.

A man and a woman, both with warrants out in the state of Montana, had barricaded themselves with a mattress in a room at the Motel 6 and were telling police they were armed.

Police worked for close to 3 hours to try to diffuse the situation peacefully but it ended with shots being fired.

Deputy Mark Gregory reported that the female suspect pointed a gun out the window of the room, and prompted police to fire their own weapons.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The man was taken into custody.

The area around the Motel 6 on Hutchinson is still being blocked off as police investigate the scene. Other police agencies are now involved too because shots were fired by deputies.

Deputy Mark Gregory said this is never how police want a situation like this to end as shots being fired creates a much greater risk to everyone involved.

Students at the nearby Spokane Valley High School were originally to be bused to West Valley High School, but as of now, for Spokane Valley High School students, class is canceled for the day.

UPDATE: Spokane Valley High School has canceled school for the day after the standoff situation nearby. Police expect to have the scene blocked off for the next 4-6 hours.
