KHQ.COM - The KHQ Crime Trackers are covering Consumer Protection Week with help from the Better Business Bureau. Today’s tip warns of hiring a friend or a family member to conduct business. The BBB says issues can arise because emotions can play a role in a business deal and can cloud one’s judgment when dealing with someone close.

If a person does choose to hire a friend, there are tips the BBB recommends. First, make sure to sign a contract. Even though one might assume they can trust a friend by their word, it’s a good idea to write up a contract that sets the pay scale and lays out a time frame and completion date. Establishing a time when the project will be completed is essential, especially considering a friend will often agree to do the work in their free time. And finally, make sure that whoever does the work is licensed, bonded and insured. The BBB say that this ensures that you will not be held liable for damages if a problem happens to occur.
