CAUGHT ON TAPE: Ice Jam Breaks in Yellowstone River

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

With the warmer weather, more snow and ice have melted, and that water can flow right into the Yellowstone River.

As the water rises, it can pick up ice along the shore and carry it down stream, and when that ice gets caught, it creates a jam.

That's exactly what happened near Riverfront Park in Billings.

As you can see in our time lapse video, the ice continues to build up until the pressure finally gives way and the jam breaks.

One man who lives along the river says he has seen this before.

Many times, if the jam doesn't break soon enough, it can cause flooding.

"That's when I decided to come up here and maybe I better take a look at what's going on case I needed to start packing stuff up, picking things up, putting them on the counter and what not, you know," says Billings resident Jan Parrish.

Jan says he has lived in Billings along the river since 1998.

He also says *thank goodness* it broke because the ice can pile up very fast and flooding follows.
