IRVINE, Calif. – The Gonzaga University baseball team had 11 hits but scored just two runs in an 11-2 defeat against UC Irvine at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark Sunday.

UC Irvine (11-3) got on Bulldogs (3-10) starter Brandon Bailey for six runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings. It is the freshman's third loss of the year.  Anteater Elliot Surrey picked up the win after allowing two runs in 5.0 innings.

Gonzaga trailed 1-0 entering the second inning before Taylor Jones connected for the first Bulldog home run of the year. With the bases empty, Jones drove his first collegiate homer over the left field wall to tie the game.

However, UC Irvine regained the lead in the bottom of the third and did not look back. With one out and two on, Conner Spencer hit a two-run triple to center field putting the Anteaters up 3-1.

The Anteaters distanced themselves in the fifth and six innings by scoring a combined six runs. The damage was done off the bat of Taylor Sparks who knocked in three of those runs. On the day, UC Irvine out-hit the Zags 13-11.

GU's other run scored in the sixth inning. Runners were on the corners and Cory LeBrun scored on a Jones fielder's choice groundout.

Lefty Derek Callahan relieved Bailey in the sixth inning and got dinged for four runs on two hits. Callahan recorded two outs in the frame before getting replaced with Ben Brown.

Brown, making his second appearance of the season, worked a scoreless 1.1 innings. Gonzaga's final pitcher to get in was Wyatt Mills who was tagged for a run on two hits in his inning of action.

Payden Cawley Lamb had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Caleb Wood and Beau Bozett also recorded a pair of hits in the game.

The Zags conclude its series with the Anteaters Monday. The two will play under the lights with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
