Deputy Accused Of Working Retail Job While On Duty

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says he's placed deputy Charles Sciortino on administrative leave pending an investigation into his conduct. Knezovich says Sciortino worked an off-duty shift Thanksgiving night last year while still clocked in on the job. Sheriff Knezovich says Sciortino is being investigated for the theft of $384  as payment for the on-duty shift he did not work.

The job Sciortino is accused of working was off-duty employment. For example, deputies are allowed to work in full uniform, local sporting events or security details as long as it doesn't interfere with on-duty work and they are not being paid by Spokane County. Knezovich says it's being investigated as theft because it was tax payers money he was paid.

In 1995, Sciortino was critically shot on the job while working as a police officer in Riverside, California. He survived and according to a Riverside Police Officers Association article he "gave up a medical retirement pension to return to duty for the Spokane County Sheriff's Office." Sciortino also worked for the Kootenai County Sheriffs office in Idaho from 2005 to 2008 before heading to Spokane County. KHQ reached out to Sciortino through social media and a number listed for Sciortino but he has not returned calls or messages.
