ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates helped out host Central Washington in a 15-5 non-conference baseball loss on Wednesday afternoon.

Whitworth (5-7) hit the ball well, but committed six errors and allowed ten free passes to CWU (8-9).

The Pirates took an early 3-1 lead on RBI singles by Nick Motsinger and Joshua Davis in the third inning. But the Wildcats tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

CWU broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring six runs on only two hits. Joel Johnson, who finished the game with four RBIs, drove in two with a bases-loaded single in the frame. Then the Wildcats added four more runs on a wild pitch, two bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

Garrett Hughes was the only Whitworth batter with two hits. He went 2-4 with a run scored. Nate Lamberty and Gerhard Muelheims added RBIs for the Bucs in the sixth inning.

Johnson finished 3-5 at the plate for the Wildcats. Cameron Harper was 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs.

Nick Scourey (1-1) started on the mound for Whitworth and went 4.1 innings. He gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Four Whitworth relievers combined to allow nine runs on only six hits with five walks.

The Wildcats used a different pitcher in each inning. Skye Adams (2-3) threw a perfect fifth inning for the win.

The Pirates will host Pacific Lutheran this weekend in a three-game Northwest Conference series.
