BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Mitchell Gunsolus’ two-bagger in the top of the seventh inning brought home the go ahead runs for the Gonzaga University baseball team Wednesday night, as the club snapped its four game losing streak 4-3 over CSU Bakersfield at Hardt Field.

The Bulldogs’ much needed win improves the clubs record to 4-12.

The critical inning began with singles from Cabe Reiten, Sam Brown and Jimmy Sinatro to load the bases. Gunsolus then connected for his double to right field off Roadrunner starter Alex Dailey to put GU on top.

The hit marks Gunsolus’ second multiple RBI game of the year. In addition, the junior has impressively reached base in each game this season.

Sean-Luke Brija, making his fifth relief appearance of the year, dodged CSU Bakersfield’s efforts to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. With runners on the corners with no outs, Brija was able to induce a timely double play. A run scored on the play but Brija escaped the inning two batters later on a fly out to left field.

Senior Karl Myers got the start for the Bulldogs and he did not allow a run until the fourth inning. He was responsible for 5.1 solid innings allowing two runs on five hits. Kenny Smith earned his second save of the season by working 2.0 innings to close the game.

CSU Bakersfield was the first team to score with RBI singles from Nick Vehlewald and Chance Gusbeth in the bottom of the fourth. However the 2-0 lead was short lived.

GU tied the game in the sixth. Gunsolus (hit by pitch), Jeffrey Bohling (walked) and Beau Bozett (walked) to load the bases with one out. Cory LeBrun then hit into a fielder’s choice to score Gunsolus. The next batter, Payden Cawley Lamb, singled to right to bring home the tying run. The final out of the inning occurred on the play as LeBrun was thrown out at third base.

The Bulldogs out-hit the Roadrunners 9-8. LeBrun and Reiten led the way with a pair of hits each.

Brija was credited with the win while Daily takes the loss for CSU Bakersfield.

Gonzaga will have a day of rest before it opens West Coast Conference play. Starting Friday, the Bulldogs will take on the University of San Francisco. The Zags 2013 season ended at the hands of the Dons when USF eliminated GU from the WCC Baseball Championship Tournament.
