Details Revealed in Hatfield Murder

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

According to recently released court documents, Adam Hatfield allegedly murdered his father with the use of a baseball bat.

Records say authorities found blood stains in multiple areas of the cabin where Matt Hatfield, and his son, Adam, were taking care of Matt's mother.

In late 2008, police found blood on the walls, the floor, and on the bed sheets.

Also discovered at the property was a baseball bat with blood on it.

The blood was sent to the crime lab. At that time, DNA was taken from Adam, his mother, and Matt, but the documents say blood didn't match the DNA of any.

More than two years went by searching for Matt, with a lack of DNA evidence matching with the blood.

In October of 2012, police found a human skull in the Lowland Campground area.

The skull had suffered some sort of trauma and was sent to the state crime lab.

DNA from the skull was compared to the unknown samples obtained from the blood found inside the cabin and on the bat.

The crime lab was able to establish good probability the DNA from the skull was a match for the blood, but they couldn't establish the probability that DNA was from any of the known samples.

In October 2012, police transported Adam Hatfield's truck to the state crime lab, with pieces of the cabin floor where blood had been found.

In April 2013, the lab completed a Serological and DNA analysis.

Those tests found several strains of human blood in areas of the truck where you would not expect to find blood from the vehicle's owner, like inside the tailgate.

The blood from the car matched the DNA from the unknown samples taken earlier, which has led authorities to believe the blood to be from Matt Hatfield.

Since Adam was using the vehicle for years and since the time Matt went missing, it has also led authorities to believe Adam committed the crime.

Adam is being charged with deliberate homicide as a result of the new evidence.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on March 27 in district court.
