Study Tries To Find What's Happening To Moose

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

FWP is trying to find out why we're losing moose.

Last week, FWP put radio collars on seven more cow moose south of Libby.

That makes sixteen moose that biologists are keeping their eyes on in the East Cabinet area.

They're in the second year of a ten-year study that looks at everything from where the animals set up home base, to how successful they are in having young.

The collars can also send out a special signal if the moose dies.

"It's kind of almost nationwide, we've seen a decline, at least in the west here, of moose and in Montana we've seen a decline of moose across the state," explained John Fraley, a spokesman for Montana's FWP.

Experts have no idea if it's disease, predation, or even parasites that are eating away at the moose population.

Auctioning off just one moose permit for thousands each year has paid for a big part of this study.
