The Spokane Chiefs finished the 2013-14 regular season with a 40-26-3-3 record and 86 points, good for 6th place in the Western Conference. They face the 3-seed Victoria Royals in the 1st Round of the playoffs, with Victoria claiming home-ice advantage. The Chiefs were 3-1 versus the Royals during the regular season, but last played way back on January 3rd.

AGAINST VICTORIA

The Chiefs and Royals open their 1st-Round series in Victoria as the Chiefs will look for continued success against the B.C. Division opponent Royals. The Chiefs visited Victoria twice very early in the season - Spokane’s 2nd & 3rd games of the year - and won both; 6-2 on September 24 and 6-1 on September 25. Mitch Holmberg led the Chiefs in the first game, scoring twice and adding two assists on his way to 1st-Star honors. Mike Aviani would step up in the second game, scoring a career-high 4 goals. The Royals were without leading scorer Brandon Magee and 3rd-Round NHL Draft selection Keegan Kanzig for those first games.

Victoria would have their revenge on October 19, winning a 4-1 contest at Spokane Arena behind a spectacular performance by 18-year-old goaltender Coleman Vollrath. Vollrath, who would go on to lead the WHL in save percentage this season, made 41 saves on 42 shots, including multiple sprawling efforts.

The fourth and final matchup between the two clubs this year was a 5-3 win for the Chiefs at home as Holmberg again scored twice on the Royals while earning 1st-Star honors. Eric Williams earned his 2nd win against VIC, stopping 24 of 27 shots while the Chiefs outshot the Royals 41-27.

The Chiefs outshot the Royals 157-111 in the four games, an average of 39-28. The Chiefs power play unit scored 6 times in 17 advantages while the penalty kill allowed 5 goals in 19 shorthanded situations.

PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE

Mitch Holmberg leads the Chiefs active roster in both playoff goals and total points with 20 goals and 28 points (18th in franchise history) in 37 games (32nd). Mike Aviani has played 38 career playoff games (t-26th) - most on the team - scoring 9 goals and adding 17 assists for 26 points (21st). The next highest scorer after Holmberg and Aviani is team captain Reid Gow, with 2 goals and 9 points in 23 games played. Gow also leads the team in career playoff penalty minutes with 37.

Eric Williams has appeared as netminder in 24 playoff games, posting playoff averages of 2.87 goals against and 0.910 save percentage. His career playoff record is 11-9-1-0 entering the series.
