Zaepfel Stadium Okayed to get Million Dollar Makeover

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima School District is finally moving forward with renovation plans for Zaepfel Stadium. It's been an issue on the table for years.

The Superintendent for the Yakima School District said money has been the big problem. The school district has invested in some huge projects lately like rebuilding Eisenhower and Davis high schools.

The superintendent says Eisenhower, which sits right next to Zaepfel Stadium came in over budget and the bid was higher than they expected, so no extra funds were available.

The school board told the district that project costs for Zaepfel can't go over $4.5 million.

Coaches and school officials said they're just excited to get the ball rolling.

"We've been driving this issue for a number of years," said Phil English, Eisenhower High School's Track & Field Coach. "So absolutely, it was a very important day, and I was very very happy. I slept well last night."

"We do have usage by the community of a lot of our facilities so I think it's exciting," said Yakima School District Superintendent Elaine Beraza. "A win win for everybody, long overdue."

The school district said they're taking out the grass field and replacing it with field-turf. They're also installing better lighting.

The school board said they're still deciding on how they're going to pay for the project. Taking money from reserves is a possible option.

They hope to start construction in May so work can be done over the summer. By the time September rolls around, the school district hopes to have a beautiful, brand new track and field.
