SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior Kayla Johnson added yet another honor to her resume as she was named to the 2014 Division III Coaches’ All-America Team by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The Colfax, Wash. native became the first Whitworth women's basketball player to earn First Team All-America distinction since Tara Flugel earned the honor in 1992.

Johnson was previously named First Team All-NWC and was voted First Team All-West Region by D3hoops.com. She helped Whitworth to a 21-8 overall record and a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Johnson led the Northwest Conference with a 41.5 three-point field goal percentage and ranked second with 18.5 points per game. Her 7.3 rebounds per game ranked seventh in the league, and her 76.9 free throw percentage ranked ninth in the conference. Johnson was the leading scorer and the leading rebounder in 17 of Whitworth’s 29 games. Her nonchalant shot could inspire her teammates and exasperate her defenders. Only once in her 28 games played could an opponent find a way to hold her below double digits; her ability to drive to the basket and score was as sweet as the tea in the South.

In the postseason—both NWC and NCAA Tournament games, Johnson averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. She posted back-to-back double-double games against Whitman in the NWC Championship win and George Fox in Whitworth’s first NCAA Tournament win.

Johnson finished her career with 1298 points to rank fifth on Whitworth’s career scoring list.
