McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Corey VanDomelen’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted top-ranked Linfield to a 3-2 win over visiting Whitworth on Sunday in the finale of a three-game Northwest Conference baseball set.
The Wildcats improved to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the NWC after sweeping three close games against the Pirates (6-12, 3-6).
Eric Lawson doubled home VanDomelen in the top of the first inning before an out was recorded to give Linfield a quick 1-0 lead. Whitworth starting pitcher Spencer Ansett settled down after the first two batters to go seven innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Bucs tied the game in the fifth when Matt Miller, who finished the game with three hits, led off with a triple and Garrett Hughes followed with an RBI single.
Two errors and a passed ball allowed Clayton Truex to score in the bottom of the sixth for the Wildcats. But Whitworth retied the game in the eighth when Joshua Davis singled in Nick Motsinger, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
The Pirates got a pair of runners on base in the 11th inning, but could get the go ahead run.
Backup catcher Chance Laboda led off the bottom of the 12th with a single. After he was sacrificed to second base, VanDomelen drove him home with a single to right field.
Michael Renner and Jason Renner combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Whitworth. Taylor Isadore tossed the final 1.1 innings and fell to 0-2 this season.
Aaron Thomassen started the game for Linfield and allowed two runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings. Joseph Stevick went 3.1 shutout innings. Cody Walker (1-0) earned the win with 1.1 innings of relief.
Whitworth will play a non-conference doubleheader at Whitman College on Tuesday, looking to end a four-game skid.?
