Bozeman Escapee Faces New Felony Charge

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

A convicted sex offender who led law enforcement on a three-week chase across the Northwest, faces a new felony charge for failing to register as sex offender.

Prosecutors filed a new felony charge of failing to register as a sex offender against 28-year-old Kevin Anthony Briggs, adding it to the list of his charges, which include escape, attempted sexual intercourse without consent, assault on a peace officer and aggravated assault.

County Attorney Marty Lambert filed the charge Monday, saying Briggs, a convicted rapist, failed to register as a sex offender with the counties and states he crossed into while on the run from law enforcement.

Briggs walked out of the Gallatin Co. Law and Justice Center on Feb. 1, as he was being questioned by detectives about accusations a sexual assault against a female acquaintance.

He was on the run until police were able to arrest him Portland, Ore. on Feb. 23.

Under state law, sexual offenders must register with the county within three days of changing a name, address, residence, employment or school.

They must also notify the county if they move to a new state and register with the new state as a sexual offender.

Lambert says Briggs failed to alert Gallatin Co. and several other counties in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon when he was on the run.

The penalty for failure to register as a sexual offender can be up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
