BENTON COUNTY, WA - A new group formed Monday of prominent Tri-Citians with a single message; the criminal justice system in our area can be improved.

Citizens for Safe Communities hope to make those improvements with the help of a new sales tax increase.

Spokesperson and Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg explained in a press conference that a new sales tax, already on the august 5th primary ballot, would not only save lives but also make sure the right people get the right justice they deserve. This includes creating a mental health court and great strides would also be taken to deal with gangs.

"Unfortunately we do a great job of suppression, however I've had a lot of people come up to me in the community and continue to talk about ‘what can we do to slow this down? What can we do to maintain our quality of life? What can we do in the future?'" said Hohenberg.

Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller explained that hiring a prosecutor to deal specifically with gang related issues would be a great help. The .33 of a percent increase is a proposed sales tax and not a property tax. It would only cost about three cents for every $10 spent in Benton County.
